“”Chevrolet Automobile””

The Chevrolet Motor Company was one of the many ideas of William Durant . In 1909 Durant talked Louis Chevrolet into a partnership that founded the Chevrolet Motor Company in 1911 . Louis Chevrolet was well known as a race car driver and the name Chevrolet was very well known at that time . Chevrolet had driven races to promote Buick , and worked with Durant at Buick previous to their partnership . The first Chevrolet automobile was from designs , and experimentation that Louis Chevrolet worked on for some years before the partnership began . It used a 6 cylinder overhead valve engine that Chevrolet had designed and built in his own machine shop .

Durant and Chevrolet had disagreements which lead to Durant buying Louis Chevrolets share of the company that wore his name . Durant had so much success with the Chevrolet Motor Car Company , that he was able to buy controlling shares in the General Motors Corporation . In 1916 Billy Durant became President of General Motors (which he had founded and lost) again . In 1917 William Durant merged his Chevrolet Motor Car Company with General Motors Corporation . The decal that is found on Chevrolet vehicles is a “Bowtie” . It was chosen for Chevrolet by William Durant , but the origin is not definite . Some say Durant designed it from the shape of Switzerland , which was Louis Chevrolet’s birth place which is likely .

In 1915 Durant made a deal with Sam McLaughlin (of McLaughlin-Buick) to also build Chevrolet vehicles in Canada , and so the Chevrolet Motor Car Company of Canada was born . In 1918 McLaughlin-Buick and The Chevrolet Motor Car Company of Canada were purchased by General Motors to become General Motors of Canada .
