Maxwell Automobile - Extinct Autos
_______________
The Maxwell-Briscoe Company was founded in 1904 by Jonathan D Maxwell and Benjamin Briscoe in Tarrytown New York . Their automobile manufacturing facility was destroyed by fire in 1907 . A new assembly plant was built in New Castle Indiana , which was the largest of that time . Benjamin Briscoe formed the International Motor Company in 1908 with Maxwell-Briscoe and Buick involved , but that venture was a failure . In 1910 he formed the United States Motor Company with Maxwell-Briscoe as the main company involved . In 1912 the USMC went bankrupt . In 1913 the Maxwell-Briscoe company and the USMC was sold to Walter Flanders , who renamed the company the Maxwell Motor Company . Sales of Maxwell automobiles were very good at first and Maxwell ranked 3rd to Ford and Buick . About 60,000 cars were sold by 1914 . Maxwell was said to be among the top race car of the time , which helped sales . During WWI , auto sales declined and by 1920 Maxwell sales were down . In 1921 Maxwell Motor Company merged with Chalmers Automobile Company and Walter P Chrysler took controlling interest in the company . In 1923 the Chalmers models were discontinued . In 1925 Walter Chrysler formed the Chrysler Corporation and the Maxwell name was phased out and Maxwell models became Chryslers .
